{"id":40,"date":"2009-03-24T12:26:41","date_gmt":"2009-03-24T16:26:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fitness-toolkit.com\/?p=49"},"modified":"2009-03-24T12:26:41","modified_gmt":"2009-03-24T16:26:41","slug":"dns-or-dnf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/?p=40","title":{"rendered":"DNS or DNF?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you knew that you would not finish a race, would you go ahead and start it anyway or simply become a spectator?\u00a0 That&#8217;s the question I had to ask myself regarding the <a title=\"Ironman New Orleans\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ironmanneworleans.com\" target=\"_blank\">Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans<\/a>\u00a0next month.\u00a0 I signed up for it (and paid the entry fee) last Fall.\u00a0 After failing to finish the Boise Ironman 70.3 last June, I buckled down, started training harder and then signed up for this inaugural race in the Big Easy.<\/p>\n<p>What I did not expect was to become so sick after a triathlon in September that I could barely sit and work at the keyboard all day, let alone run, bike, or swim.\u00a0 After four weeks, I went to the doctor and he said it was bronchitis.\u00a0 It felt more like walking pneumonia to me.\u00a0 Anyway, I missed six weeks of training and when I started back, coughed like a maniac at the end of each run or bike ride (swimming wasn&#8217;t even an option yet).\u00a0 Then, after my first marathon 3 months later, I sprained my ankle and spent another two weeks on the mend.<\/p>\n<p>After all of this, I decided not to race in the Ironman New Orleans 70.3.\u00a0 Even though it was paid for and all of the plans made, etc., I decided to just become a spectator.<\/p>\n<p>I imagine that if it was a NASCAR race and I knew that I could at least get some points, then I might have made a different choice, but this is a physically grueling race that requires preparation.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s always next year or the next Ironman 70.3, but for now I&#8217;m going to take the DNS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not racing in the Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans<\/p>\n<div class=\"read-more\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/?p=40\">Read more &#8250;<\/a><\/div>\n<p><!-- end of .read-more --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[7],"tags":[34,35,56,69,75,313],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/40"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=40"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/40\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":39,"href":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/40\/revisions\/39"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=40"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=40"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.tomheller.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=40"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
